Here is the research article by Anna Stokke (2026) that many newspapers have quoted regarding the decline of math skills and the need for improved Math instruction.

What is it about?

Over the past decade, Canadian math scores on the Program of International Student Assessment (PISA) and Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS) have declined in all provinces.  Improving math achievement in Canada requires a combination of evidence‑based instruction, better use of assessment data, stronger curricula, and well‑prepared teachers to ensure students build solid math foundations for future academic and career success.

Key findings:

To help reverse the decline, the report outlines several evidence‑based strategies:

  • Align instruction with the science of learning
  • Use assessments and data to improve learning
  • Strengthen provincial math curricula
  • Improve teacher math content knowledge
  • Appoint leaders committed to reform

What can Mindset do for our students?

  • Our head teacher & curriculum developer Sarah is a current High School Math & Science teacher with over 2 decades of experience.  She is a math/science specialist and continues to learn about teaching and Math / STEM education through conferences and has a post graduate diploma in Special Education.
  • We use teaching methods backed by research with a blend of explicit, teacher‑led instruction for skill building and inquiry based approaches to encourage curiosity.
  • Our curriculum develops foundational skills in students based on their skill level, not grade level.  It allows us to support individual students, whether they would like to build skills or excel beyond the BC curriculum for their grade.
