Here is an article from the Vancouver Sun published March 2, 2026.
What is it about?
Canadian students’ math scores have dropped significantly over the past 20 years. As a teacher, I see this troubling trend where students who have difficulties with basic math have increased over the years. In addition, this article notes top performing students who pursue STEM fields nearly halved from 21.6% to 12.1%. This article talks about what the government, teachers and parents can do with the increase of struggling students, and the decline of students who excel in Math.
Why is this important?
Math is foundational for critical thinking, financial literacy and problem solving. Research indicates that early math achievement corresponds with higher academic achievement and career earnings.
What can Mindset do?
Mindset believes children can succeed at math. We provide the foundational skills through concrete manipulatives and explicit instruction. We use puzzles, math games and discussions to build our student’s skills.
If you have any questions, come see us at Mindset! Early intervention is critical as Math is cumulative. – if students fall behind early, the gap often snowballs. We would be happy to discuss your child’s needs or your concerns.
